He was born in Wormwood Scrubs, Hammersmith, London, England, and has lived in United Kingdom, Mona, Jamaica, Canada, and the U.S.A.. He performed multiple instruments in local Canadian bands, writing many songs, until getting the chance to record in Toronto Sound studio, the home of Rush producer Terry Brown. It was there that John met longtime partner Dee Long of Klaatu. Later he became keyboard/guitarist/vocalist for the CBS Canada pop group Bond, and toured with the Canadian bands;, "Funn", "Canada", and Gary O's; "Kid Rainbow".
